WHY do I need a permit?

Permits are required in order to ensure projects meet the environmental and safety requirements in the International Building Codes, Washington State Codes, and the Chehalis Municipal Code.

Example TRIGGERS FOR PERMITS:

Change of Occupancy or Change of Land Use
Construction of any Building over 200 square feet
Utility and Plumbing Work (including appliance and furnace installation)
Siding, Windows, and Roofing
Fences and Signs
Moving a Building or Installing a Manufactured Building
Demolition, Excavation, or Fill
Clearing Trees
Fire Systems

An application cover sheet form filled out in full. Find the Cover Sheet HERE.
Any attachment application forms that apply to your project (Building, Right of Way, etc.)
Energy Code Worksheet (All Occupied Structures)
Fees to be paid at time of submittal

NEW BUILDINGS REQUIRE (IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE):

One complete digital set of construction plans
Stormwater Plan
Location of all Critical Areas as listed with Lewis County GIS (FEMA floodplain, shoreline and stream areas, CARA, wetlands, steep slopes, and the rest listed) that exist on the project site
A site plan that shows the entire parcel and includes at minimum the following:

Drawn to scale
Any proposed new structures
Any existing structures
Any proposed or existing water and/or sewer lines
Access driveway or easement road, existing and proposed
Any proposed or existing easements that affect the property
Show roads and sidewalks and all parking areas
Identify critical areas as defined in CMC 17.21

Preliminary BLA and Short Plat Reviews

SP/BLA application form
1 full size digital copy of the plat done by a licensed Washington surveyor
Closures sheet.

Existing buildings, additions, remodels require:

Completed cover application form and attachments
Detailed construction plans drawn to scale; show what is existing and what is proposed
If the proposal is for an addition, a site plan is required (see above)
If replacing siding and home is built prior to 1990, may need additional permitting through SWWCA.

Building demo permits require:

A cover sheet application form
A site plan that shows the entire parcel and includes at minimum the structure(s) to be demolished
An approved demolition permit from Southwest Clean Air Agency showing that all asbestos has been properly removed
After demo is complete, call for an inspection to close out permit. *The additional benefit of this is that the information gets submitted to the Lewis County Assessor’s office and the demolished building(s) are removed from the tax rolls.*
