An old saying amongst those in the planning profession is that if you fail to plan, what you are really doing is planning to fail. Communities are always facing this dilemma. If the community you work, play, and live in does not have a plan for its future, what may ultimately happen is that the community will fail to adapt to change and be unable to take advantage of opportunities.

A key facet of the Renaissance, which aims to lay out a 25-year plan for city services, buildings and amenities, was a mail-out/phone-back survey conducted by the consulting firm.

Burn Pile
"By state law, the disposal of yard debris by burning is permanently banned within an Urban Growth Area (UGA) or other designated No Burn Areas (NBA). This is due to the population density, air pollution impact, and available alternatives to burning.

Since 2009, the Chehalis Community Renaissance Team (CCRT) has been involved with several projects totaling over $1 million.  These projects were made possible through partnerships, grants, and community support.  We wish to give our sincere thanks to the following:

ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES - Administrative staff plan, organize, direct and coordinate services; manage the budget, personnel, and policy development; and provide for facility and material management, fleet control, records management and training.

Chehalis Fire History
  • August 19, 1890, The Chehalis Volunteer Fire Department was created by city ordinance.

  • In the spring of 1892, two disastrous fires devastated the business district in downtown Chehalis. The previous organization was ill-equipped to handle such catastrophes thus leading to an official organization.

Public Education

We at the Chehalis Fire Department serve in many Public Education capacities. Below are just a few of the ways we can help educate the public on fire safety, medical emergencies, our daily operations, and more!

Public Service Announcements:

Swift Water Rescue Training

Technical rescue refers to those aspects of saving life or property that employ the use of tools and skills that exceed those normally reserved for firefighting, medical emergency, and rescue. Members of the Chehalis Fire Department are qualified in Swift Water and Rope Rescue. Technical rescues will often require the need for multiple jurisdictions or agencies operating together to effect the rescue, and will often use the Incident Command System to manage the incident and resources at scene.

Arson Investigation

Every fire needs to be investigated for cause and origin.

The Chehalis Fire Department has been investigating fires within the city since the founding of the department.

Our fire investigators will typically be dispatched for any fires that may appear to have been arson, result in a substantial loss, involved insured property, or that result in injuries or fatalities. Currently under contractual agreement, our investigators respond out to other jurisdictions in Lewis County to investigate fires.

Pre-fire Inspections
Annual Business Inspections

The Chehalis Fire Department performs annual pre-fire inspections on all the businesses within city limits. Because the primary purpose of these inspections is to ensure life safety, we may identify a hazard and immediately inform the business owner or manager.

Business Plan

Dear Business Owner;

We are pleased to announce that the City of Chehalis has partnered with the Washington State Department of Revenue (DOR) for Business Licensing services.

DOR will process the City of Chehalis business licenses and renewals from now on. If you start a new business in Chehalis, you must apply to the DOR.

More details to come shortly.

Community Involvement

We take great pride in our community and love to be involved in it. Though the COVID pandemic has frozen or discontinued many seasonal events, you will see department members and apparatus participating in numerous activities as events resume. Historically, we have participated in the following:

Generator Use

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless, colorless gas that can kill you.

Where is CO found?

CO is found in fumes produced any time you burn fuel in cars or trucks, small engines, stoves, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, or furnaces. CO can build up indoors and poison people and animals who breathe it.

What are the symptoms of CO poisoning?

How often should I change my filters?

Frequency may depend but depending on use and type of system. If you only have a heating system, you may only be replacing these filters every 3 months of use during the winter. If you have air conditioning as well, manufacturer recommendations may recommend anywhere replacing filters every 1 to 3 months. The type of replacement filters purchased may also dictate the frequency they need to be changed. We recommend you regularly check your filters make sure they're not clogged or full of dirt.

Concerned about brush, grass or forest fires where you live?

It is important to prepare your home for the wildland season. Yard maintenance and defensible space are essential in keeping vegetation that may catch and spread fire to your home. Dry outdoor conditions indicate an even greater need to keep brush and vegetation clear from around the home.

The Chehalis Community Renaissance Team was accepted into the Washington State Main Street Program in May 2014.  Using a four-point approach, the program enables communities to revitalize their downtowns and neighborhood business districts by leveraging local assets.  The Main Street Four-Point Approach® uses a comprehensive strategy to address issues and problems that challenge traditional commercial districts:

Put your tax dollars to work locally for Chehalis!

The Main Street Tax Credit Incentive Program provides a Business & Occupation (B&O) or Public Utility Tax (PUT) credit for private contributions given to eligible downtown organizations.  Once your business donation request is approved by the Department of Revenue, you are eligible for a tax credit worth 75% of the contribution to your downtown revitalization organization.

To learn more about this opportunity, please see the below brochure for details about investing your tax dollars to your own community.

The Chehalis Community Renaissance Team (CCRT) recognizes the amazing businesses who made a contribution through the B&O Tax Credit Program to enable us to continue pursuing activities and projects to enhance Historic Downtown Chehalis.

Chehalis-Centralia Airport

Photo's of the Airport!

Chehalis-Centralia Airport History

The well-oiled machine that we now call the Chehalis-Centralia Airport was nothing but a 600-acre farm, owned by the Donahoe family, before a portion of it was developed and sold to Lewis County back in 1927. Not much happened on this piece of land until the dedication of an airstrip and the opening of the Riverside golf course on May 21, 1927. Before the dedication, Paul Donahoe constructed an aircraft maintenance facility which consisted of an office and a hangar, and the area was cleared to make way for a turf runway.

Freeway Brush Fires

Firefighters help drivers and passengers — and you can help them by giving them the space they need to respond to emergencies.

For many firefighters, the most dangerous part of any call is simply getting there. Up to 25 percent of annual firefighter deaths occur as they are responding to and returning from incidents and training. You can reduce this danger by making sure you’re staying out of the way and making it easier for firefighters to respond to calls.
